Rifamycins (Rifampicin, Rifabutin etc.) are potent inducer of hepatic enzymes, and hence, the protective efficacy of oral contraceptive pills may be decreased. Hence, female TB patients of reproductive age group on ATT may choose alternate methods of contraception like use of IM medroxyprogesterone, barrier methods like diaphragm, condom, IUD etc. or, as a last option, an OCP containing a higher dose of oestrogen (50 μg /tab), throughout the course of treatment.
